What Happens If a Takedown Fails?

A takedown is marked as Failed when all automatic retry attempts are exhausted without a successful submission.

Common Reasons for Failure

  • The platform's submission form or API changed.
  • The infringing URL returned a 404 before submission completed.
  • Rate limits were hit (especially for high volumes).
  • The platform rejected the notice (e.g., counter-notice already filed).

What You Can Do

  1. Retry manually — click Retry in your dashboard. DMCA Bot will attempt resubmission.
  2. File manually — use the Export function to download the infringement details and file a notice directly via Google's copyright removal tool or Bing's content removal form.
  3. Contact support — reach out via the contact form and we will investigate the failure.

When Should I Consult a Lawyer?

If a takedown fails repeatedly because the infringer keeps re-uploading, or if a counter-notice is filed in bad faith, you may need to take legal action (e.g., a court injunction). We recommend consulting a copyright attorney in these cases.
